Developing and basic readers will be evaluated annually in grades one through five to monitor continuous progress toward reading proficiency. Students will be assessed using the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) as follows:
First graders will be assessed for accuracy, phrasing, and retelling:
November: primer level passage
April/May: primer level passage (if standard met in the fall, first grade level passage)
Second graders will be assessed for accuracy, phrasing, rate, and retelling:
October: second grade passage (required by state)
April/May: second grade passage if standard not met in the fall
Third graders will be assessed for accuracy, phrasing, rate, and retelling if standard not met during second grade:
October: second grade passage
April/May: second grade passage if previous score 7 or less, third grade passage if previous passage score 8 or more
Fourth graders will be assessed for accuracy, phrasing, rate, and retelling if grade level standard not yet attained:
October: passage previously attempted if last score 7 or less, passage one level higher if previous score 8 or higher
April/May: passage previously attempted if last score 7 or less, passage one level higher if previous score 8 or higher
Fifth graders will be assessed for accuracy, phrasing, rate, and retelling if grade level standard not yet attained:
October: passage previously attempted if last score 7 or less, passage one level higher if previous score 8 or higher
April/May: passage previously attempted if last score 7 or less, passage one level higher if previous score 8 or higher
